Micrel and Cyan Announce Technology and Business Partnership

Companies to Jointly Develop Industrial RF Modules For Global Markets

Cambridge, UK and San Jose, CA, Jan. 12, 2009 - Micrel Inc., (Nasdaq:MCRL), an industry leader in analog, high bandwidth communications, and Ethernet IC solutions, and Cyan (AIM:CYAN), a leading supplier of embedded processor solutions for networking and industrial control/communications, today announced that they are working together on a technology partnership. The collaboration involves developing subsystem level module products targeted at Automated Meter Reading infrastructure, Public Lighting management, Ethernet gateways and RF sensor network markets. Micrel is expected to provide the RF chips with Cyan supplying the microcontrollers and system software.

Kenn Lamb, CEO at Cyan comments, "This partnership provides our customers with production ready modules complete with drivers, protocol stacks, RF mesh networking, and even embedded web servers. RadioWire® technology enables a family of low power RF enabled Ethernet/USB gateways and nodes for a range of industrial applications. The modules are user customisable and supplied with a free graphical development tool providing an easy to use and cost effective solution to industrial control and communications."

"Micrel and Cyan plan to collaborate on developing subsystem level module solutions for growing and emerging global markets," noted Scott Ward, vice president analog business unit, Micrel. "Cyan specializes in the development of applications using their eCOG1X and eCOG16E01 microcontroller chips and, when combined with Micrel's RF chip solutions, the partnership should produce dynamic solutions for customers worldwide."

The MICRF505 is a family of true single chip, frequency shift keying (FSK) transceivers that are intended for use in half-duplex, bidirectional low powered RF links. These multi-channeled FSK transceivers are targeted at UHF radio equipment in compliance with the North American Federal Communications Commission (FCC) parts 15.247 and 249, China Standard No. 423 and the European Telecommunication Standard Institute (ETSI) specification, EN300 220. The MICRF506 is designed to operate in the unlicensed 433MHz ISM band. These chips support data rates up to 200kbps and are part of Micrel's recently launched RadioWire® family covering the UHF band. The products are aimed at the automated meter reading, alarm and security, and Personal Area Network (PAN) markets and are suited for a wide variety of applications including gas, water and energy meters; home, building and security monitors; industrial controls, and sensor networks.
