Cyan's next generation IDE breaks the bounds of the microcontroller with support for external peripherals

Free CyanIDE 2®download extends the benefits of configurability and ease of use to the board level

Cambridge, UK - 22nd April 2008. Cambridge-based fabless semiconductor company Cyan announces the availability of a next generation version of its popular Integrated Development Environment (IDE) CyanIDE. CyanIDE 2 breaks the bounds of the microcontroller, extending the benefits of configurability and ease of use to the board level. CyanIDE 2 provides support for a portfolio of external peripherals which will enable user modification of Cy-Solved™solutions at the system level. Driven by future Cy-Solved products and customer requirements, Cyan will continue to extend the libraries of external peripherals with each new release. Using CyanIDE 2 greatly reduces time to market, simplifies product prototyping, reduces the development cost associated with embedded application software and provides automated portability between members of the Cyan microcontroller family of devices. CyanIDE 2, with extended capabilities remains free for download without usage restrictions.

The easy to use graphical system delivers not only the basic editing, project management, code building and debugging elements, but also system configuration, optimised automatic code generation and a high level abstracted peripheral driver framework. Bringing these elements together in the Graphical Configurator of CyanIDE 2, users can focus on design at the system level, selecting devices external to the core microcontroller in combination with the peripherals that are internal to the selected Cyan microcontroller.

Previous releases of CyanIDE were based on a proprietary C compiler and IDE technology. CyanIDE 2 embraces the popular industry standard Eclipse platform and GCC based tool chain. Eclipse enables Cyan to introduce a new extended feature IDE with the stability of a widely used industry standard tool set.

CyanIDE always offered automated code generation and easy peripheral configuration. CyanIDE 2 has evolved to support a design flow that introduces the concept of "Design Warnings". During system design, immediate feedback is given highlighting areas of a design that may give cause for concern. Substantial system design intelligence has been built into CyanIDE 2. Other new features include improvements such as the ability to debug more than one connected embedded target from the same IDE simultaneously.

"Developing an embedded application using a traditional IDE is typically very knowledge intensive, time consuming and error prone," explains Stephen Page, Software Group Manager of Cyan. "Often the most expensive R&D component of modern product cost is in the development of the application software and ongoing maintenance of that software. The desirability for early prototyping and testing of new product ideas is often hindered by the time and cost to develop the software applications for these early prototypes. Using CyanIDE will greatly speed time to market and allow early product prototypes to be developed with minimum effort."

CyanIDE 2 is available to download from the Cyan website - www.cyantechnology.com. It is free to download with no restrictions. To support the launch of CyanIDE 2.0 and enable new customers to carry out a full evaluation of it, Cyan are offering its DEVKIT1X for £149, a saving of 40% (rrp. £250). The DEVKIT1X and a range of other evaluation and developments kits, starting at 49 are available from the new Cyan webshop which opens early May.

About Cyan

Based in Cambridge in the UK, Cyan Holdings plc is a fabless semiconductor company specialising in the development of applications solutions collectively known as Cy-Solved™ which are built upon the company's low powered, configurable eCOG1kG and eCOG1x microcontroller chips.

Cy-Solved™ incorporates ready to go solutions, software stacks, applications examples, modular software based on easy to use APIs, evaluation boards and production hardware modules from partners, all pulled together through Cyan's free integrated development environment CyanIDE. Cy-Solved™ can be incorporated as-is into an application but also supports an ability to be easily customised - either way, giving users a head start on the road to market. Currently available Cy-Solved™applications include RF-Solved, USB-Solved, Ethernet-Solved and Motor Control-Solved.

The Company was founded in 2002 and listed on AIM in 2005 Cyan Holdings plc operates through the brand 'Cyan'.
